BONE BUILDERS

Sunshine: A source of Vitamin D

Weight-bearing exercise: Builds strong bones and muscles

Dark leafy vegetables: Calcium rich

Yogurt: A source of calcium

Calcium: The building block of bones

Calcium fortified: foods with calcium added (see "Calcium" above)

Jumping rope: weight bearing exercise. Also run, dance, jog, roller-blade, play tennis.

Vitamin D: Helps the body absorb calcium

Non-fat milk: A super source of calcium with less calories than regular or low-fat milk. one cup has 300mg of calcium!

Cheese: Another good source of calcium. Mozzarella cheese has less fat than others.

BONE BUSTERS

Soda is double trouble: Scouts who drink a lot of soda instead of milk don't get enough calcium. Soda steals calcium from bones!

Fracture: This is a broken bone. Fractures can result form osteoporosis or from overuse as in stress fractures.

Smoking reduces the calcium you absorb and makes you grow less. Smoking causes cancer. Cancer kills.

Alcohol reduces the calcium your body absorbs and interferes with proper nutrition, as the alcohol often replaces calcium-rich foods. it can also lead to falls.

Caffeine also reduces the calcium your body absorbs

Falls: People need to avoid falls because when they fall, they might break a bone. It is important to prevent people with osteoporosis from falling. They are more likely to break a bone froma slight fall.

Stress causes bones to become more brittle and weakens muscles so they cannot hold the bones in place properly

Couch potato: People who don't exercise - who watch too much TV - are couch potatoes. Exercise is important for overall health, not just bone health. Turn off the TV or computer and go for a walk!

Weightlessness: Astronauts who are weightless can lose bone mass very quickly

Slippery places can cause falls

Eating disorders keep people from getting a healthy diet and enough calcium intake.
