Patch Requirements: Senior
7. Plan a Mini-Camp
Plan and hold a Mini-Camp for younger scouts. Obtain the Mini-Camp description from your leader. Add or change events. Several older scouts or a whole scout troop can learn about osteoporosis and educate others about this condition. This may help the older scout satisfy certain Silver or Gold Awards requirements.
8. Analyze a vegetarian diet
Research a vegetarian diet. Define the different types of "vegetarian". What are the primary sources of calcium for each of those types of vegetarian diets. Use "Bone-Building Foods" to determine the approximate milligrams of calcium provided per day on the diet. Does the diet meet the recommended calcium intake for your age group? For your parents age group? Discuss with your troop the different types of vegetarian diets.

9. Investigate weightlessness
Research weight-bearing exercise to find out. What is it? What are some examples of weight-bearing exercise? What is the importance of weight bearing exercise in osteoporosis prevention? Report your weight-bearing activities (and any new ones you plan to start). When astronauts go into space, they become weightless. Research what happens to astronauts' bones when they are weightless. If weightlessness is a problem for astronauts, determine what is being done to protect astronauts from the effects of weightlessness. How are space stations being designed to help deal with this issue?

10. Research other causes of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis usually results from aging. Drugs and diseases can also cause osteoporosis. Some drugs, such as corticosteroids, cause osteoporosis. Find out what drugs, in addition to corticosteroids, can cause osteoporosis. Find out why these drugs cause osteoporosis. Also identify diseases which cause osteoporosis and the reason.
11. Research bone mass measurement
Bone mineral density studies are performed on women and men to determine whether they are at greater risk for osteoporosis. These tests use methods such as x-ray and ultrasound.
- Research the different types of ways of measuring bone mineral density.
- Discuss which skeletal sites are measured and why.
- Review the World Health Organization criteria for osteoporosis.
